Denver, the capital and largest city in the state of Colorado, is situated in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains.  At an altitude of 5,280 feet above sea level, the city has affectionately been named the “Mile High City” due to its incredibly lofty elevation.  Settled in 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Denver has since grown to a busy metropolitan city that still support its mining and agricultural roots.  The sprawling city is composed of seventy-nine neighborhoods, namely Union Station, Capitol Hill, Highland, Washington Park, Lowry, and Uptown.

Located in City Park, about three miles east of downtown Denver, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science offers a variety of exhibits, programs, and activities that aim to help visitors experience the natural wonders of Colorado, Earth, and the universe. The museum’s exhibits, IMAX films, lectures, classes, and programs inform guests in topics including anthropology, geology, health science, paleontology, space science, and zoology. The museum has also received the highest honor a museum can achieve, which is accreditation by the American Association of Museums. Although the nation has over 16,000 museums, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science is one of only 750 museums that are accredited.

The museum offers both permanent and seasonal exhibits, some of which include Discovery Zone, Egyptian Mummies, Expedition Health, Gems & Minerals, Wildlife Exhibits, Stones from the Sky, Space Odyssey, Prehistoric Journey, and North American Indian Cultures, and Genghis Khan. The museum also offers other unique online “exhibits” such as Ancient Denvers, Colorado’s Forces of Nature, Ice Age, Water & Life on Mars, and Follow a Fossil. The museum also has an IMAX theater, planetarium, snack bar, cafe, gift shop, library, and archives. The museums also accommodates school groups.
